Assigned to Ecuador in the PC, I worked with poor farmers trying to improve crop yields with technology I learned in Costa Rica. Hell, I had no experience with agriculture whatsoever. I bought a mule and rode it around the Andes with sacks of fertilizer distributing it to those that could not afford it. The locals thought I was a quack, save for a ravishing beauty that was attending college in the capitol but returning to my pueblo on weekends. My buddies and I always tried to get the Grand Slam (four different kinds of amoebas) so we could gain an all expenses paid round trip to the nurses' station in Quito. I served with USAID in Ecuador (twice), Peru (twice), Bangladesh, Egypt, Guatemala and India. Life overseas continued through 2007 and I came back to the U.S. in January of 2008.
